Umbrella Academy Universe: Comics Continue the Saga
Umbrella Universe Expands
Although season 4 closed one chapter of The Umbrella Academy on screen, the Hargreeves saga continues in Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s Dark Horse graphic novels.
Way, the comics’ creator and lead singer of My Chemical Romance, and Bá, the series’ artist, were in Hollywood for the Aug. 5 premiere at the Egyptian Theatre to mark the show’s finale.
They witnessed the fandom firsthand — crowds cheering outside whenever cast members appeared — and both creatives seemed moved by the moment.
Bá, who had just flown in from Brazil, said the scale of the premiere felt completely different from his usual workflow, which is mostly remote collaboration with Way.
Working together online is routine for them, he noted, but being there in person for the celebration added a special quality to the experience.
Way echoed that sentiment, expressing pride for everyone involved and satisfaction that the comic-world he built inspired such a committed TV adaptation.
Offscreen, the two are already developing the next Umbrella Academy graphic novel volume, which will intersect with the show in places but remain its own story.
As showrunner Steve Blackman has indicated, the comics and the series will follow different paths — the creators have the freedom to pursue their own version of events while the show does the same.
That separation means certain plot beats, like the so-called “Jennifer incident,” will be handled differently between mediums.
Fans can expect the new volume to continue expanding the comic’s universe beyond where the television adaptation concludes.
On a lighter note, Way said he was pleased to hear a My Chemical Romance song featured in the season 4 trailer — a neat crossover between his musical and comic worlds.
All told, the premiere was both a celebration of the series’ run and a reminder that the Hargreeves family’s story will live on in print.

Umbrella Academy Final Chapter
Gerard Way Shares Insights on 'The Umbrella Academy' Legacy
In a candid reflection on the journey of 'The Umbrella Academy,' creator Gerard Way opened up about his experiences with the beloved series as it reaches its conclusion.
When discussing character details, Way confirmed that Five's numerical designation is indeed his actual name, explaining that the character essentially refused to adopt a conventional name—a detail faithful to the original comics though not explicitly shown in the adaptation.
Reflecting on what he'll cherish most about the production, Way emphasized the cast's genuine enthusiasm and camaraderie. "I really loved just all their enthusiasm. It's a great group of people and they have fun," he shared. Way noted that by intentionally giving the adaptation space to evolve, "it got to grow into this beautiful thing that was its own thing."
The creator expressed particular delight in witnessing fan cosplay throughout the years. Even before the television adaptation, Way recalled seeing numerous fans dressed in the iconic school uniforms at comic conventions, with Klaus emerging as a particularly popular character choice among cosplayers.
Way offered heartfelt gratitude to the fanbase, stating, "It's a gift to be able to make art and for people to support it so you can keep making it. I never take that for granted."
In an unexpected crossover, Way seemed pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of My Chemical Romance's track "The End" in the final season's trailer. Rather than using the more obvious choice of "Black Parade," the production team selected a track that Way and his bandmates had always envisioned would work well in such a context, creating a serendipitous connection between his musical and literary worlds.
