Step-by-Step Process to Start NGO in India

Starting an NGO is one of the most rewarding ways to give back to society. Many people want to contribute but do not know how to begin. I have worked with NGOs and legal procedures for years, and I want to share a simple guide with you. In this blog, I will explain the process to start NGO, the key registrations like 12A registration, and darpan NGO registration.

Why Start an NGO?

I believe starting an NGO is not just about paperwork. It is about creating a platform where people come together for a cause. Whether you want to work in education, health, environment, or women empowerment, an NGO helps you create real impact.

But for your NGO to grow, you need a proper legal structure. A legally registered NGO gains trust, gets government recognition, and becomes eligible for grants.

Choosing the Right Structure

The process to start NGO begins with choosing the right legal form. In India, you can register your NGO in three ways:

  • Trust

  • Society

  • Section 8 Company

Each option has its own rules and benefits. A trust is easier to form, a society is best for group work, and a Section 8 company is ideal for large-scale professional NGOs.

I always advise people to choose the structure based on their vision. If you see long-term work with bigger projects, then Section 8 company registration may be the right choice.

Registering Your NGO

After selecting the structure, the next step is registration. This step ensures your NGO has a legal identity. You will need documents such as:

  • Identity proofs of members

  • Address proof of office

  • Memorandum or Trust Deed

Once you collect these, you can file for registration with the state or central authority. This step is crucial because only a registered NGO can apply for tax benefits and grants.

Applying for 12A Registration

Once your NGO is registered, you should apply for 12A registration. This registration gives your NGO tax exemption. It means the money you receive for social work will not be taxed.

I find this step very important because it builds trust with donors. Donors prefer supporting NGOs that are tax-exempt. Also, it helps you save funds for projects instead of losing them to tax payments.

The process is simple. You need to submit your NGO registration papers, PAN card, and activity details to the Income Tax Department. Once approved, your NGO will enjoy tax-free income.

Importance of Darpan NGO Registration

Another key step is darpan NGO registration. This registration is done on the government’s Darpan portal. It connects your NGO with different ministries and departments.

I always recommend this step because it makes your NGO eligible for government grants and CSR funding. It also adds credibility since your details become part of the government’s official database.

To complete darpan NGO registration, you need your NGO’s registration certificate, PAN, and basic details of members. Once you apply, you will receive a unique ID that helps in funding applications.

Running Your NGO Effectively

Starting an NGO is not just about registration. Once you complete the process to start NGO, you need to run it responsibly. This includes:

  • Keeping transparent accounts

  • Filing annual returns on time

  • Following legal compliances

  • Updating your activities on the Darpan portal

I always stress that transparency builds trust. When people see your NGO working honestly, they are more willing to support your cause.

Conclusion

The process to start NGO may sound complex at first. But when broken into steps—choosing a structure, registration, applying for 12A registration, and completing darpan NGO registration—it becomes simple.

I have guided many people through this journey, and I know anyone with passion can do it. If you dream of making a difference, now is the time to start. With the right legal support, your NGO can grow and create lasting change.
